Tuxedo Footwear. It All Ends Here.

by Victor R. Santos

The formal shoe is as distinctive from other men’s tuxedo footwear as the tuxedo jacket is from a suit. From time to time gleaming, every now and then fixed with a decorative bow. Yet until the end of time, looking more like gents house slippers than a pair of shoes, the conventional shoe is the only suitable way to finish off the formal tuxedo.

Informal shoes are most often worn, formal shoes are worn less frequently. Formal shoes are constantly favored for being worn most often than not to wedding or business use.

The formal shoe, known as a pump or a court shoe, has changed very little since its introduction into the world of men’s fashion three centuries ago. Like the tuxedo, it is admired for its timeless sophistication. The shoe is always made from black leather, usually from patent leather, though it can also be seen in the more matted standard leather.

Shiny leather lace up shoes date back one hundred years or so from English Colleges. They are popular because they can be made to fit different widths of feet, and because they fit so snug they are much better for dancing etc.

It is vital to stay always avoid cheap forms of leather as the shoes’ gloss is important to exhibiting the most refined look. Even if patent leather is not chosen, the calf skin upper should be correctly polished for a glossy veneer.

Cheap leather will not achieve the same elegant effect as it will look dull and lackluster, along with its lesser quality making it crack and peel. You will achieve the ideal look and always ensuring that the formal shoes are well polished before each wear.

The plain cap shoe can also be considered, but the plain toe version is considered best due to lack of adornments. The plain toe version are more versatile and look less like work shoes than the plain cap toe versions. The plain cap toe version and loafers are improper.

The Balmoral and open laced Bulcher are two forms of Oxford style shoes. The Balmoral is regarded as more prim and proper, more suitable for tuxedo footwear. English and American establishments view the Balmoral as the only proper Oxford shoe.
