The cold and flu season has always been a difficult time stay healthy, but virulent strains of influenza like H1N1 can make it even more stressful. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid catching a bug and getting sick.

The most important and easiest step you can take to stay healthy is to wash your hands with soap frequently. Always wash them before you eat, whether it's at home or at a restaurant. When you come home from being out in the public be sure to give your hands a good washing before touching or doing anything.

Keep your hands away from your face, especially your mouth, when you are unable to wash them. Doing so will help prevent spreading germs.

Hand sanitizers are a great alternative when soap and water are unavailable. Use them sparingly since they can inhibit the growth of good bacteria and make you more susceptible to germs if overused.

To guard against illness, it helps to always eat healthy. Be sure to eat fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants, such as blueberries and spinach. Take a multi-vitamin daily and drink plenty of fluids, especially water.

Taking vitamin C will help keep your immune system working at its optimum level. Probiotic yogurts increase your intake of good bacteria and also boost the immune system. Eating a well-balance diet is always a good idea.

Another way to stay safe this cold and flu season is to get a flu shot. You may not like getting shots, but it's one that is worth the minimal inconvenience. Vaccinations help prevent the H1N1 and other diseases.

Nowadays getting a flu shot is since they are offered at your local drug store as well clinics and doctor's offices. Everyone should get a flu shot, whether or not you are considered "high risk." Flu shots have been proven safe in tests.
